Summer is finally here; for many homeowners, it’s time to open their backyard pools. But while a pool may seem like a fun and refreshing addition to your home, it also comes with its fair share of responsibilities. As temperatures rise and more people start using your pool, keeping it clean and safe for swimming becomes increasingly tricky. That’s where a professional pool cleaning and maintenance company can be handy.

The Challenges of Maintaining a Pool in the Summer

As the weather heats up, pool water becomes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, algae, and other microorganisms. The increased heat also speeds up the growth of these organisms, making it harder to keep your pool clean and debris-free. Combine this with regular use from family and friends, and it’s easy to see why maintaining a pool during the summer months can be daunting.

Time-Consuming

One of the biggest challenges of maintaining a pool in the summer is the time commitment involved. Cleaning and balancing chemicals can take up a significant amount of time each week, especially when you factor in skimming leaves and other debris from the surface. This can quickly become overwhelming for busy homeowners who already have packed schedules.

The Importance of Proper Chemical Balancing

Properly balancing your pool’s chemicals is crucial for keeping the water clear and healthy for swimming. However, achieving this balance can be tricky; even a slight miscalculation can result in cloudy or unsafe water. This is where the expertise of a pool cleaning and maintenance company comes in handy. They have the knowledge and experience to ensure your pool’s chemicals are correctly balanced without harming swimmers.

Increased Costs

Maintaining a pool during the summer also means increased costs for homeowners. From purchasing chemicals to paying for additional water usage, the expenses can quickly add up. Additionally, if you don’t properly maintain your pool, it could lead to costly repairs.

The Benefits of Hiring a Pool Cleaning/Maintenance Company

If maintaining your pool during the summer seems too much of a hassle, hiring a professional pool cleaning and maintenance company can make all the difference. Here are some of the benefits they offer:

Time-saving: By outsourcing your pool maintenance, you’ll have more time to enjoy your pool and the summer season.

Expertise: Pool cleaning and maintenance companies have trained professionals who understand how to properly balance chemicals and keep your pool clean and safe for swimming.

Cost-effective: While a cost is associated with hiring a professional service, it can save you money in the long run by preventing costly repairs due to neglect or improper maintenance.

Maintaining a pool during the summer months is no easy task, but it doesn’t mean you must give up on enjoying your backyard oasis. With the help of a professional pool cleaning and maintenance company, you can have a clean, well-balanced pool without the stress and time commitment. So make a splash this summer while leaving the maintenance to the experts!

When families begin to think of installing a pool, they might question how to go about doing so. Some may think they can tackle a DIY project, as it will end up being a cheaper alternative. However, without help from professional pool contractors, installing a pool can be a disastrous project. Here are the reasons why you should always consider working with a pool contractor.

Knowledge of Permits

To build a pool, you will need several permits. This can vary depending on which state, city, or community you live in. In some areas, permits may only be required for above-ground or in-ground pools. Others may be needed for spas or Jacuzzis. Pool contractors know the permit process, so they can be of assistance when deciding what the best permit is to obtain.

Efficiency and Fast Work

Prospective pool owners are still unsure of the kind of pool they want when they initially think of installing one. Owners might not know that investing in pool materials is conducive to the space they live in. Since so many are unaware, they must get the hello from a trusted pool contractor.

They’re There For Your Questions

Addressing your concerns is one of the biggest reasons you should work with a pool contractor. From building to safety concerns, a professional pool contractor is available to assist you. They demonstrate a level of knowledge and safety through the passing of certification tests.

Pool opening season is right around the corner, and as exciting as it may be, it is also the time where many people find trouble with their pools.

When you begin to open your pool, look out for these common problems. The earlier you catch them, the longer you can enjoy your pool when it comes time.

Leaks

Pool leaks can be many different forms. A water leak can start from the shaft seal, or it could be due to the pump that connects to the motor. Pool filters can also leak on the filters. Other leaks are common around the skimmer. Double-check the backwash line and the multiport valve. If you are uncertain about where the source of the leak comes from, you should contact a professional pool maintenance company.

Air leaks are also another form of common pool leaks. When your pump draws in air, it will fill up the filter tank and discharge bubbles into your pool. Air leaks almost always come from the pump.

Algae Growth

You can prevent algae with solid pool coverings or by managing the pool levels. But if you fail to properly cover your pool, there is a risk algae has grown. Algae can be treated, however.

Pool Stain

Pool stains are a very common occurrence. You will likely notice them when you first take your cover off. Most stains will disappear with chlorine and circulation, so don’t worry too much.

Opening your pool is one of the most exciting ways to welcome the warm weather. If you have identified any of the issues above, you may want to have your pool inspected and maintained regularly with a service package.

How often have you been excited about using your pool, only to find that the water is suspiciously murky? Sundays Off Pool Service and Repair understands how frustrating it can be when algae sabotages a nice day at the pool, and knows how to restore your water to its clear, clean appearance quickly with algae removal service.

Causes of a Green Pool

If chlorine levels drop, it can lead to the growth of algae in your pool. Not only will the algae give your pool water a green tint, it can attract mosquitoes and other insects, exposing your family and friends to diseases like West Nile. Algae growth not only harms the appeal of your pool, but is considered a hazard to public health. Because algae growth becomes a host for various pathogens, any signs of growth need to be treated immediately.

Treatment and Removal of Algae

Sundays Off Pool Service and Repair, in the Minnesota and Henderson, Nevada area has the experience and skill to treat a variety of algae that can threaten your pool, including:

Green Algae

vBlack Algae

Algae Blooms and Spores

Mustard or Yellow Algae

Pink Algae

No matter how well-maintained your pool chemicals are, algae spores will always be present. They continuously find their way into your pool due to rain, wind, or other debris. Treatment involves making sure that the spores are not able to bloom into algae. These blooms are what cause the green color normally associated with algae growth. If you suspect that you have algae blooms in your pool, it is important to schedule service as quickly as possible. Untreated algae is a health hazard to anyone who uses your pool.

Types of Algae

You are probably familiar with green algae, which is the most common type and causes pool water to appear green. However, there are many other variety of algae that can harm your pool.

Plaster pools are at risk for black algae, which appears as black spots or patches. Black algae is difficult to remove, and may be a source for more harmful bacteria like E. Coli. The pink slime often referred to as “pink algae” is not actually an algae at all, but a bacteria. Although it poses no risk to humans, it is unsightly and makes surfaces slippery, increasing risks to safety.

A more rare type of algae is “mustard” or yellow algae. It is found at the bottom of your pool and looks like dirt or sand. It is resistant to chlorine, so it can be extremely difficult to remove. Professional service is highly recommended if your pool is home to yellow algae.

Algae Treatment in Minnesota

No matter what color or type of algae you are dealing with, Sundays Off Pool Service and Repair has the knowledge and equipment to restore your pool water, and make sure the algae doesn’t return.

If you suspect algae is growing in your pool, hire a professional as soon as possible. Not only is algae unsightly, but it can be a real risk to you and your family’s health.

Even though you may have maintained your swimming pool regularly, there are a few issues you can’t prevent over a long time. If your pool is a bit old, then it can malfunction and its wall may crack.
However, old swimming pools aren’t the only ones that require repair. Even if your pool is fairly new, it could show signs that ask for a professional repair.

Check out the following four signs that show that your swimming pool needs repair:

Wall cracks

The most prominent sign of your swimming pool needing repair is when it starts showing wall cracks. Cracks are usually caused by water leakages that slowly erode the walls around the pool and make the entire structure weak and unsafe. Another cause of these cracks is the use of sub-standard construction material in the building of your pool.

When you notice these cracks, contact a pool repair company for a formal inspection. Fixing these cracks will ensure your safety and longer life of the pool.

Broken lights

If you notice that your pool lights are broken, you need to contact a professional pool repair company immediately. A disrupted electric source and water can make your pool very dangerous.
You’ll have to drain your pool and turn off the electricity entirely to prevent any hazards. It’s not recommended to DIY the electric fittings or fixing the lights. Leave the repair work to professionals to ensure long-term safety and prevention.

Heater malfunction

If your pool water is showing fluctuating temperatures, or you experience the supply of only cold water, then your heater is probably malfunctioning.

Heaters usually stop functioning due to blocked pipes that prevent the access of water to the heater. The malfunctioning controls of the heater could also be another reason for extremely cold or hot water.

A professional will be able to identify the root of the problem and will repair your pool in a way that lasts longs.

Dirty water

If your pool water is continuously dirty even if you do regular cleanups and maintenance, then this is an obvious sign that your swimming pool needs repair.

The water pipes of your pool could be blocked by dirt or debris, that pollutes the supply of water into the pool. Your pool filters could also be malfunctioning, which could result in dirty pool water.
This issue can only be permanently solved by a pool repairing professional. Make sure you get your pool inspected for other issues as well, and get it all fixed in one go to prevent future malfunctions.

If you have a pool, then you’re one of the privileged. However, maintaining a pool is a chore in itself, and one that you need to be mindful of.

Getting regular professional inspections and repairs will keep your pool healthy and safe for long-term use.

If you’re seriously considering buying a pool, you are likely aware of the many different styles available. But there are two types of swimming pools that are commonly pitted against each other: saltwater and chlorinated. Saltwater pools and systems, as of lately, have become more common. But what exactly is the difference between the two? Here’s an in-depth guide to differentiate the two.

Saltwater Pools

When it comes down to pool types, the term usually refers to the sanitization system. Saltwater uses salt for sanitation, and it typically relies on an automated system. In terms of structure, the saltwater pools require a more durable pool. This is due to the corrosive nature of the salt.

Most saltwater pools will be composed of high quality racing throughout to ensure it is properly covering the ledges, joiners, and tracks, to avoid rusting. This gives the pool flooring and lining a softer feeling.

Pros:

more gentle on the skin and eyes

won’t harm or fade swimwear

requires less maintenance and use of chemicals

Cons:

can cost more than chlorinated pools

can end up damaging the pool without proper lining

sanitation system is more complex

Chlorinated Pools

Chlorinated pools are pools that utilize chlorine for sanitation. Unlike the automated system of a saltwater pool, chlorinated pools require more maintenance. The chlorine should be added daily via powder or tablets.

Pros:

less initial investment

uses less electricity than saltwater pools

more customizable fixtures can be easily installed

Fixing an issue is much easier than with a saltwater pool

Cons:

chlorine is harsher on your skin, hair, and eyes

chlorine levels must be checked regularly, to ensure the bacteria is killed

must diligently care for chlorine storage

Is One Better Than the Other?

Chlorine pools have been around much longer than saltwater pools, but that’s not say it is inherently better. But the benefits to the skin and hair could sway one prospective pool-buyer’s vote. Chlorine requires more maintenance, but a saltwater pool will cost more upfront. Ultimately, it’s up to you and your family’s needs and wants.

When someone says the words salt and water, the mind probably most often goes to the ocean. It sound strange that people own salt water pools, but they absolutely do. The main difference between salt water pools and traditional pools is how they are sanitized. A traditional pool uses chlorine based products, for example. Whether a salt water pool is a good option for you is your choice. Here are some things to consider.

How Traditional Pools are Sanitized

For the most part, sanitizing a traditional pool involves regularly treating the water with chlorine. There is a chlorinator attached to the filtration system which disperses the cleaning agent. The owner will add chlorine on a scheduled basis, which is usually weekly or biweekly.

Salt Water Pool Sanitation

A salt system works a little differently. The two components are the salt cell and the control box. The salt cell is connected to the control box through two pieces of metal. An electrical charge from the control box through the metal plates starts a process called electrolysis. The water flows through the salt cell and the salt that it carries with it turns into hypochlorous acid. The chlorine that is used in traditional pools is a form of hypochlorous acid.

With salt water pools, there is nothing really added into the water to sanitize it. You can control how much salt is mixed in with the water at any given time through the control box. It will have buttons that make it easy to control. You can also “shock” the pool by using the control box’s boost mode, which outputs the salt at a maximum level to give the pool a quick cleaning.

Benefits of a Salt System

The main benefit that people appreciate about salt system is that they do not have to work with chlorine. It is only present in the water through the hypochlorous acid, so there is no need to handle it in any way, whether it is dropping in tablets or scooping out from a bucket. There is still chlorine in the pool, but since it is diluted it is less harsh. Also, once you have added the salt, there is less work involved. The control box does the work, and you will not have to regularly place chlorine in the pool or shock it. You only have to use the control box to control the salt output.

What are the Cons of a Salt System?

One of the biggest downsides of a salt system is that the initial investment is much higher than with a traditional sanitization system. Also, just like with chlorine, the pool service company does have to be careful with the salt. If your pool has metal ladders or railings, then you will have to replace them with plastic versions since metal can corrode when exposed to salt over time. Another option is to install a zinc anode by the filter. This anode will absorb the electrical current that comes into the water the water. Since zinc is a soft metal, the current will hit the anode first, and it will take the brunt of that excess current and salt. This means that you may only have to replace these anodes, which is quite simple, as opposed to the other metal accessories in the pool. Another issue is that the drops of water from the pool can damage the deck if it is not salt-friendly. Wet bathing suits or even splashes from the pool will leave salt residue on the deck, which can corrode the material and leave stains. The deck must not be flagstone, bluestone, or travertine.

If you contact a professional, they can advise as to whether a salt system is right for you. When making the decision, you can weigh the pros and cons to decide whether a salt system is the appropriate option for your pool.

Human knowledge has developed over the centuries, and we now have a much firmer understanding of chemicals and how they react with each other. Humans had no qualms about drinking dirty water or food and did not connect it with any illnesses they may have gotten. Contamination just was not something that those early humans understood. Now that we know better, we are fully aware of the dangers that germs and bacteria represent. Every day, we do things to help prevent the spread of those germs and keep ourselves from getting sick. This is important when it comes to pool maintenance. We use chlorine to sanitize our pool water and keep it pure. Here are some reasons why we need chlorine in our pools.

Water Purity

The water in your pool can come into contact with contaminants in many ways. They are often presented to the water through humans, but they can also come from nature. Humans sweat, wear cosmetics, and emit bodily fluids. These can all end up in pool water. Dust, debris, and bacteria can be swept into the water on the wind, can fall from trees, or can be left by rodents or birds who end up in the water. While an indoor pool might be able to protect from the natural sources of contamination, it cannot protect against the human source.

How Chlorine Helps

Keeping to a regular chlorination schedule is one of the most important steps in any pool maintenance schedule. It will help ensure that the water is kept at its most hygienic level at all times. What happens when chlorine is added to the water is that it breaks down into chemical compounds. These compounds are mostly hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions. To make sure that the chlorine is at its most effective, the pH level of the pool needs to be at the right level. That means keeping your pool water at a pH of 7 to 8.4. 7.4 is, in fact, the perfect level.

Why Does Chlorine Work So Well?

As mentioned, human scientific knowledge has vastly improved when it comes to chemical reactions. When chlorine takes the form of the hypochlorous acid or hypochlorite ions, it attacks the lipids that are present in bacteria. It will also kill enzymes in the bacteria. This, in effect, kills the bacteria and makes it safe. Since pools have so many microorganisms and bacteria in the water, chlorine is a great way to get the water safe for us humans to use.

Can it Cause Irritation?

There is no doubt that chlorine is a great way to cleanse pool water and make it safe for swimming. However, it does come with some drawbacks that all pool owners should have in mind. First off, it does have that familiar strong smell that is just not unpleasant, but it can irritate the nose. Chlorine can also cause itchy skin to certain sensitive skin types. Hypochlorite ions have a tendency to adhere to clothing fabrics, so it is vital to rinse off after getting out the of the pool, otherwise your swimwear may start to have fading colors. If there is too much chlorine present in the pool water, it can even lead to breathing and lung issues, as well as other health concerns.

As pool owners, we all want our guests and our families to enjoy swimming in the pool and cooling off on hot days. It is necessary to add chlorine to make sure that everyone can enjoy the water safely. However, it is important to make sure that the chlorine is handled and used properly at all times.

Your pool may be brand new and in perfect condition, but it is probably still costing you money. Pools are a great investment, but some of the costs can be surprising, especially if there is a repair needed. If you find a leaky pipe then it is best not to let it go if you are worried about the cost of fixing it. A small leak can become a big problem if left for too long. Here is what you should do if you find a leaky pipe in your pool.

A Guide To Leaks

There are probably around 20,000 gallons flowing in and around your pool at any given time. Because of this, it can be incredibly hard to locate or even identify if there is a leak. There are special methods that involve listening equipment and dyes, but they can be quite expensive. Luckily, there are two questions you can ask to help you identify a leak in most cases.

The first question is whether you are losing more water than normal. Water is constantly leaving your pool through evaporation and splashing, but if it seems to be leaving at an unreasonable rate, then you might have a leak. To test this, fill a bucket of water and mark where the water level is. Place a mark where the pool water is as well. After 24 hours, if the pool has lost water at a greater rate than the bucket, then there is a chance you have a leak.

The other question is whether the pool seems to lose water when the pump is on. If your pool looks cloudy, it may be because you are losing clean water and pumping in dirtier water through the filter valve.

Some other things to watch for are a lower flow rate, a loose pool pump, low filter pressure, and a pump that seems to have difficulty moving water.

Fixing A Leak

The best thing to do if you have a leak is to contact a professional to come to do the repairs. If you try to save money and do it yourself, you may end up causing more problems, which will then cost more money in the end.

How Long is Minnesota’s Swimming Season?

There are many reasons why Minnesota homeowners install swimming pools on their property, including for social, recreational or health reasons. If you are thinking of installing a swimming pool on your property, you might be wondering how long you will be able to use it in a given year. Minnesota’s weather generally will allow you to use your pool for seven months every year. The swimming season here spans from April to October.

As Minnesotans, we know how important the swimming season is to us and our families. It is a form of exercise and a means for our kids to make social connections. While our swimming season is limited to seven months, you do not have to deny yourself the swimming pleasures when outdoor pools close for winter. There are various options you can take advantage of during your pool installation to extend your swimming season. These include the following.

Pool heaters. High-efficiency heaters are great for extending your swimming season in Minnesota while keeping your heating costs low. This is probably the most effective method to take you through winter.

Outdoor space heaters. There is nothing as uncomfortable as stepping out of warm pool water only to be hugged by insanely cold air. Thankfully, pool heaters can help you warm the air around your outdoor pool and allow you to enjoy your swimming pursuits throughout spring and fall.

Automatic covers. Using automatic covers helps you manage your heating costs and keep off leaves, especially during fall. You do not have to spend endless hours cleaning your pool.

Poolside buildings. These structures allows you to heat the pool to comfortable temperatures and simply jump in whenever you wish.

If you are interested in extending your swimming season in Minnesota, the above options can come in handy. You can then enjoy healthy and recreational benefits of swimming beyond Minnesota’s swimming season. All of these extended swimming benefits can be better enjoyed if you own your own backyard convenient swimming pool.

Many homeowners in Minnesota have admitted that adding a swimming pool to their property was an amazing upgrade. Family togetherness, recreation, entertainment, and exercise are just a few pool benefits that homeowners point out. Quite frankly, you do not have to worry much about the length of the swimming season. With a little modification, you can conveniently enjoy your swimming pursuits outside of summer.
